Our songwriting courses are shaped by current industry practices, meaning that the skills you acquire will be applicable to your future career. You’ll work to professional briefs, master new and emerging technologies, and carve your identity as a songwriter.
You’ll also get to spend plenty of time onstage, if that’s where your passions lie. From in-studio workshops to live gigs, we’ll help you discover how to connect with an audience and refine your performance technique.
Above all, you’ll gain a deep understanding of the contemporary music industry and how to thrive within it. We’ll ensure that by the time you graduate, you’ll have the entrepreneurial skills you need to make your own work, and a network of influential contacts to help guide your journey.
Choose your own path
Our songwriting undergraduate course puts you in control of your own learning by allowing you to choose option modules that align with your interests.
You’ll develop a core knowledge of songwriting styles, genres, techniques, and music theory in your first year, and in Year 2 you’ll be able to delve into specialised areas such as lyricism and aesthetics, writing for media, and composition.
By Year 3, you’ll have all you need to decide the specific area on which you’ll base your Final Project. This course not only provides you with a broad skill set, but also allows you to focus on the aspects of songwriting that ignite your passion.
Our Creative Futures Team is committed to helping you gain valuable industry experience, whether that’s by contributing to BIMM’s own record label, playing at gigs, or completing an internship with a reputable music company.
You’ll also get the chance to participate in songwriting camps led by industry professionals and businesses, which will give you hands-on experience and networking opportunities that can launch your career. These professional experiences not only enhance your skills but also connect you with influential figures in today’s music industry.
The Creative Futures Team offers one-to-one sessions where you’ll receive personalised careers guidance. They’ll also alert you to all the relevant job opportunities and internships that come in from our industry partners.

We’ll put you in a room with prominent musicians, prolific entrepreneurs, and top-class agents, who’ll share their exciting and varied journeys into music and media.
We’ve welcomed esteemed songwriters such as Arlo Parks, MNEK, Lianne La Havas, Jez Ashurst, and Laurence Hobbs – all of whom offered their career tips, inspiring stories and unmatched wisdom to help our students navigate the industry.

Not only will you work with aspiring musicians and producers, but also with passionate filmmakers, performers and video game creators at MetFilm School, Performers College, and MetStudios.
