Vocal Graduate Performs with Ariana Grande
A Popular Music Performance graduate from BIMM London was among a select group of performers chosen to perform alongside four-time Grammy award nominee Ariana Grande for her recent televised appearance at the BBC.
BMus Vocals alumna Kedma Macias was selected as a gospel choir member to performed alongside Ariana in the hour-long musical extravaganza which saw the U.S pop sensation perform some of her biggest hits accompanied by a full live band and an all-female orchestra.
Kedma graduated from BIMM London with a first class honours degree in Popular Music Performance and has since been making waves as a session vocalist and solo performer. She explains how the opportunity first presented itself:
“At the beginning of the year, I was lucky enough to be asked to join a Gospel Choir which is led by choral director Mark De-Lisser.” Said Kedma.
“I was asked if I was available to work on a gig in London for two days, but I had absolutely no idea what it was for until I received an email from Mark containing all the music and harmonies I had to learn. As you can imagine, I was very excited to discover that it was to sing backing vocals for Ariana Grande at the BBC!”
Kedma attended a rehearsal session the following day at West London film studios with other members of the gospel choir. This was followed by a full day’s rehearsal with Ariana’s band and an all female orchestra led by Grammy award winning composer and arranger, Steve Sidwell.
“The following day we moved into the television centre.” explained Kedma.
“We rehearsed in the studio with Ariana, which was completely surreal as it was such an intimate setting. To have the privilege of seeing one of the biggest artists in the world running through songs, trying different vocal ideas, and finalising her set list was just amazing. I was constantly pinching myself. This was the most incredible experience from start to finish and I’ll never forget it.”
After rehearsals had concluded, it was time to go live. An audience of Ariana Grande super fans took their seats in the television studio, creating an electric atmosphere before the cameras rolled and esteemed host Davina McCall introduced the first song , ‘No Tears Left To Cry’.
We’re so pleased for Kedma’s recent BBC performance success and are certain the experience will lead on to more high profile session work. She reflected on the skills gained from her course at BIMM and how it helped prepare her for a career in the music industry.
“I learn something from every gig I do, but I am so grateful for my training at BIMM because it really does give you the skills you need to go out into the real world.”
