Julia Ruzicka teams with Black Francis of Pixies
BIMM London‘s Principal, Julia Ruzicka has released her debut solo album – the self-titled, ‘This Becomes Us’ – which includes some impressive musical collaborations.
The first single to be taken from the album is ‘Painter Man Is Coming’ featuring guest vocals from none other than the Pixies, Black Francis. With an infectious bassline from Julia, ‘Painter Man is Coming’ merges screechy guitars into a melodic soundscape, with Black Francis’ distinctive vocals stamped on top.
Ruzicka wrote the whole album on bass, before bringing in Art Brut’s Ian Catskilkin on guitar and Julia’s Future of the Left fellow band member, Jack Egglestone on drums. Eight other vocalists join Black Francis including, Guy McKnight (Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster), Kristian Bell (The Wytches), Billy Mason Wood (Blacklisters), Chantal Lewis Brown (Vodun), and Damien Sayell (The St. Pierre Snake Invasion), who provided their own lyrics to the tracks. Speaking about the project, Ruzicka says:
“I have loved and still love the role I play in my bands creatively on bass. But as time passed throughout various writing periods for all kinds of records, I started to stockpile ideas on bass, and just wanted to see some of the embryonic ideas written on bass turn into fully realised songs.”
Commenting on her Black Francis collaboration:
“It was an incredible outcome, I wrote the song with him in mind, being someone who has been listening to his music for a long time. To actually have the person singing on your song that inspired that piece of music is quite a sublime event and feeling.”
‘This Becomes Us’ is out now via Prescriptions and is already receiving rave reviews:
“A piece of musical diversity, and for that reason deserves to be heard”
