Brexit Update: EU student funding will continue for 2020/21

If you’re an EU student wanting to start university in the UK for the 2020/21 academic year but concerned about whether Brexit will affect your financial support, then worry no more.

It’s been announced by the Department of Education (DfE) that you’ll have guaranteed home fee status and financial support for the length of your course in England – regardless of whether a deal for leaving the EU is in place or not.

This means that EU students will remain eligible for undergraduate and postgraduate financial support, Advanced Learner loans and FE and apprenticeships support for their course duration – just like students already within the UK. And EU students will be charged the same tuition fees as UK students, too (known as home fee status).

In the statement delivered by Chris Skidmore, the Universities Minister, it was stated that work around the future fee status for new EU students starting after the 2020/21 academic year is “ongoing”.

However, he stressed that it’s important to remember that “while the UK has chosen to leave the EU, we are not leaving Europe, and our universities thrive on the diversity of being global institutions”.
