Ella Mai Joins LA’s Hip-Hop Royalty
It takes some musicians years to break America, but ex-BIMM London vocalist Ella Mai isn’t just any artist. The in-demand songstress is blazing a trail after signing to LA producer DJ Mustard’s 10 Summers label – an appointment that has led the talented 23-year-old to collaborate with her hero Chris Brown, rapper TY Dolla $ign and UK R&B legend Craig David.
Mai was discovered in 2010 after her mesmerising Instagram covers of Fetty Wap, Michael Jackson, Kanye West and Trey Songz, to name a few, and caught the attention of Mustard.
Now the South London native is being tipped for success by a number of industry insiders and music press, including PAPER and the LA Times, following the arrival of her remarkable EP Time and news of her debut album.
Speaking about her anticipated LP to the LA newspaper, Mai, named after the great Ella Fitzgerald, said: “The word ‘album’ makes you nervous, especially ‘debut album.’ But to be honest, there’s no one around me making me feel a lot of pressure. Working on this album, I feel like I know myself way better than ever before.”
In the meantime, fans – which include actress Halle Berry – can likely expect more great music from Mai, whose talent was evident to all of us from the moment she walked into BIMM. Although we can’t take the credit for her flourishing career, we’re privileged to have played a part in her development by giving her the confidence to share her gift.
If you need any convincing that Mai is on her way to achieving incredible things, we urge you to take a listen to her latest single ‘Naked’. We guarantee you’ll be hooked!
