Tim Bräm Discovered by Director Hans Weingartner
Talented BIMM Berlin Songwriting student, Tim Bräm, was out busking on Warschauer Strasse one day, when a man approached him, impressed by the original music he was playing. He turned out to be multi-award-winning film director Hans Weingartner and now Tim’s songs are to be featured in the director’s upcoming road movie 303, due out in cinemas in 2018.
Hans Weingartner is an Austrian film director and producer responsible for feature films including The White Sound (Das weisse Rauschen), Reclaim Your Brain (Free Rainer – Dein Fernseher lügt, Deutschland 09 (Segment ‘Gefährder’) and Hut in the Woods (Die Summe meiner einzelnen Teile). His 2004 film The Edukators (Die fetten Jahre sind vorbei) won a host of accolades, including ‘Best Feature Film’ at the German Film Critics Awards, the ‘Jury Prize’ at the Capetown World Cinema Festival, the ‘Audience Award’ at the Miami International Film Festival, ‘Best Feature Film’ and ‘Best Director’ at the German Film Awards and a ‘Golden Palm’ nomination at Cannes Film Festival.
Tim and Hans chatted on the street when they met, and Hans asked Tim to send him a song suitable for use in a road movie. He sent one of his original compositions and Hans was so excited by it that he asked if he could use it in the film. But it wasn’t just Tim’s songwriting abilities that Hans was impressed by – he asked Tim to visit him at his recording studio and sing on a track one of the film’s songwriters had written.
Eager to collaborate with Tim further, Hans asked if he had any more compositions, particularly one which could be used for a sad scene in the movie. He sent him the song ‘Burn The Books’ which also appears on the recent BIMM Berlin Album 2017, as well as another track he wrote called ‘Yellow’. And now it looks like both will be featured in 303.
Tim looks back on the experience as a huge opportunity for him:
“I was surprised by how fast the chance came up. I spend a lot of hours making my demos because I want them to be as well produced as possible. It’s exciting for me to think that my songs will be in the cinema.”
Tim was also taken by how much freedom he had in the project:
“I would do it all by myself in my room and just send him the result. I learned a lot about producing because they sent me stuff back to fix when there were issues I hadn’t even thought about before. It was a great experience and took my producing skills to the next level.”
