BIMM Bristol graduates reach the top 10
Not one but two BIMM Bristol graduates are currently residing in the UK’s official top 10 album chart, with a third spot being held by a BIMM Brighton alumni band.
At the time of posting, pop singer/songwriter George Ezra’s sophomore album ‘Staying At Tamara’s’ is sitting at number 9 in the official UK album chart, just ahead of Drake’s ‘Scorpion’. Whilst ‘Joy As An Act Of Resistance’ – the second album from the increasingly popular punk rock underdogs Idles – is sitting comfortably at number 2 beneath Eminem’s ‘Kamikaze’.
The rundown, which is compiled by the Official Charts Company (based on sales of CDs, downloads, vinyl and other formats each week) also shows BIMM Brighton alumni band and indie pop trailblazers ‘The Kooks’ sitting at number 7 with their latest LP ‘Let’s Go Sunshine’.
“It’s so good to see two of our alumni in the top 10 this week.” Said BIMM Bristol’s college Principal Steve Lawson.
“What I really love about it is that both acts are so different from each other: George with his chart-friendly songwriting and distinctive voice, and Idles with an important socio-political message behind a brilliant set of songs.”
Idles drummer Jon Beavis is an alumnus of Bristol, whereas guitarist Lee Kiernan teaches BIMM Bristol’s Performance in Context module, whilst also running a film-making class as part of BIMM Extra, our extracurricular programme for undergraduates.
Soon after studying Songwriting at BIMM Bristol, George Ezra found fame with his smash hit single ‘Budapest’ back in 2013, after signing a major label deal with Columbia Records. The young artist will be touring around the UK this Autumn in support of his latest LP, whilst Idles take their formidable live show as far west as Canada and as far east as Japan this month before returning to the UK in October as part of a massive European tour.
