BIMM Berlin’s Fantastic First Term

1 February, 2016

It’s been full to the brim with excitement and surprises, and we’re pleased to say that BIMM Berlin’s very first term has been a resounding success.

Since we opened in September 2015, we’ve had a whole host of hugely talented musicians walk through our doors – including not only our incredible students, but also world-renowned lecturers, international Masterclass guests, and more. Here’s what we’ve been up to:

Masterclasses

In only a few short months, we’ve been joined for Masterclass sessions by music industry megastars including Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore; Brooklyn music collective, Snarky Puppy; Jamiroquai rhythm section members Boom n Twang; The Prodigy’s live drummer, Kieron Pepper; Vevo Germany executive, Tina Funk; The Strokes’ producer, Gordon Raphael; and English singer-songwriter, guitarist, producer and DJ, Fink. Our students were even given guest list passes by New York indie band We Are Scientists to their show with Ash, and invited to hang out with them for a drink after the gig!

Exploring Berlin

It hasn’t all been class-based learning! Our students have been getting out and about, discovering the best that this awesome musical city has to offer, including catching the soundchecks of UK jazz group The Cinematic Orchestra and American singer-songwriter John Grant, as well as taking a tour of the famous Hansa Studios with sound engineer and David Bowie collaborator, Eduard Meyer.

Tutors

BIMM Berlin lecturers are the best of the best, and outside of the college they’re all active in hugely success music industry careers. Take our Head of Drums, Peter Clarke (aka Budgie from Siouxsie and the Banshees and The Slits) for example. He joined singer-songwriter John Grant for an appearance on Later… with Jools Holland. And don’t forget the global multi-platinum producers Gordon Raphael, Michael Zimmerling and Pete Smith who joined the visiting faculty of our new Music Production course.

Student Performances

Our BIMM Berlin students have been busy on stage too! They showed an excited crowd of friends, family, staff and music industry figures what a truly talented bunch they are at the college’s very first End-of-Term Gig, held at the prestigious UFO Sound Studios. And our hot new songwriters showcased their talents in front of an audience of producers, musicians and music fans at the inaugural Berlin Lamplight session held at the Posh Teckel bar.
