Ray Tovey
Deputy Course Leader
Ray is Deputy Course Leader for HE Music Production at BIMM Music Institute London. Originally from Yorkshire, his background is as a guitarist for indie, post-rock, and punk bands, as well as recording and mixing.
Upon completing a BA (Hons) in Music Technology and Popular Music at the University of Huddersfield, he secured a job as a Music Technician at his old college. From there, he began teaching in 2007 and achieved a Professional Graduate Certificate in Education, lecturing at Wakefield College and Leeds Conservatoire, where he taught Ableton Live.
In 2011, he remixed a friend’s band, which saw a release on Bjork’s label, One Little Indian Recordings. This led to more freelance work and a move to London, which involved composing bespoke music for Nike SB, O2 and Mini Cooper and producing library music and engineering records for LUH and Father John Misty & The Haxan Cloak whilst running electronic music production workshops for young offenders and guest lecturing at Goldsmiths. Ray started at BIMM London in 2012, overseeing the FE Production Course and teaching FE and HE before moving to HE in 2021. He recently applied to become a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and is working on solo material under the artist Seckar.
