Professor Mark Irwin
Deputy Provost and Director of Postgraduate Studies and Professor of Learning and Teaching
Mark began his career as a performer/songwriter and music producer in the 1980’s working with musicians such as: David Gray, Stereophonics, Morcheeba, Hothouse Flowers, Joe Strummer, Beverly Knight, Tim Finn, Howard Jones, and The Jesus & Mary Chain. He continues to write and record music at his home studio in West Sussex.
Mark began teaching more than twenty-four years ago and worked at the University of West London for twelve years, where he was Director of Studies for Music and Performance and Principal Lecturer in Music Technology.
Since joining BIMM sixteen years ago Mark has worked in a number of senior management roles with specific responsibility for developing and enhancing higher education provision. Mark is an international expert in quality assurance having worked for the both the UK and Irish quality assurance agencies, and Learning and Teaching, holding a doctorate in Education from the University of Sussex, a Principal Fellowship from the Higher Education Academy and having acted as a subject reviewer for the Teaching Excellence Framework.
Mark is also an active researcher with a specific interest in the way popular musicians learn and the interrelated themes of creativity authenticity and identity in music.
