Kayla Painter
Visiting Faculty, Songwriting
Kayla is a producer, bass player and saxophonist. As a largely electronic solo artist, she’s signed a publishing deal with Nettwerk and released several successful tracks with the indie label Turnstile Music. Radio DJ Mary Anne Hobbs discovered Kayla at the 6 Music Festival in 2016 and has been supporting her ever since. Kayla performs her solo electronic work with a dual screen audio/visual show, which caught the eye of Glastonbury bookers and she was asked to close the Glade Stage on the Sunday night of Glastonbury in 2016.
Having studied the experimental BA (Hons) Creative Sound and Music degree at Newport Art School and a BA (Hons) in Popular Music at the University of Wales, Kayla furthered her experience with a Master’s in Music from Bath Spa University. She has extensive live gigging experience and has supported notable acts including Afrika Bambaataa, Tim Hecker, Plaid, Patten, Nite Jewel and Rob Clouth. Over the years, she’s written music for adverts and documentaries, and has even been commissioned by Disney. Kayla supports women in music and has been a guest speaker on panels discussing the visibility of women in the industry. In 2015, she was selected as one of 12 female musicians in the UK to take part in a week-long residency led by singer-songwriter Beth Orton.
