Music Marketing, Media & Communication Course Leader James Kendall is now into his third decade of writing about music, he has run his own magazine and traveled the world as a freelance journalist and photographer, as well as hosting radio shows, DJing, and promoting club nights and parties. He teaches at BIMM Music Institute Brighton.
During 12 years writing for DJmag he reviewed 5,000 singles, as well as writing 26 cover stories over a three-year period. He was the first British music journalist to interview James ‘LCD Soundsystem’ Murphy, was taken on a five-star trip by David Guetta, and sat down with Tiesto more times than was advisable, including when he won to Top 100 DJs award. He reported on the dance music scene from over 20 different countries, including Russia, Brazil and China.
Finally hanging up his professional dancing shoes, he was editor and co-owner of Brighton’s much loved Source Magazine for eight years. During that time he interviewed and gave first covers to Metronomy, Bat For Lashes, Foals, The Maccabees and many more. His photography has appeared in the NME, Spin and The Guardian, who also interviewed him for his viral Best Before project and exhibition.
James has thrown parties in clubs that have ranged from record-breaking to wallet-emptying, and has DJ'd at most places in Brighton where people dance, supporting 2manyDJs, Florence (without The Machine) and Phil Hartnoll’s Longrange amongst others. He also hosted The Future Rock & Roll Show with Ninja Tune singer-songwriter Fink for three years. His current obsession is video, with several projects already under his belt.
