Heidi Berry
Senior Lecturer, Songwriting *
Heidi teaches Songwriting at BIMM Institue Brighton. She joined as a tutor in 2002 and has taught extensively across the college, making a significant contribution to curriculum development. She holds a Masters Degree in Songwriting from Bath Spa University and a PGCE in Post Compulsory Education from Brighton University. Her specialties at BIMM include lyric writing and academic research.
An internationally acclaimed singer-songwriter, Heidi brings high-level industry experience to her teaching at BIMM. In the 90s, she released six solo albums on cult British indie labels, Creation Records (Oasis) and 4AD (Cocteau Twins). She’s toured the UK, US, and Europe as a headline act, and has supported artists including Everything But The Girl, Maria McKee, and Primal Scream.
In 2014 she released the album ‘Lost Girls’ – a collaboration with Kitchens Of Distinction frontman, Patrick Fitzgerald. Over the years she’s collaborated with many musicians, including Spear of Destiny, Breathless, and the legendary 4AD collective, This Mortal Coil.
She appears in the 2011 film ‘Upside Down: The Creation Records Story’ and there’s a lengthy entry about her in the book ‘Facing The Other Way: The Story of 4AD’. Her 90s output with 4AD is set for re-issue in the coming year, with new solo material in the pipeline.
