Matt Johnson
Session Musician
Matt Johnson, BA (Hons) Music Business alumni, graduated back in 2018. After an introduction facilitated by Nicky Williams – Industry Placements and Careers Coordinator – Matt was invited to contribute his trumpet skills in the studio with Exeter-based Romantic Gloom trio, Black Foxxes.
The recording session was produced by Adrian Bushby (Foo Fighters, Muse etc.) and went so well that Matt was asked to join the band on their European tour to perform trumpet duties live on stage. The band, who’ve released two LP’s via Universal offshoot Spinefarm Records, have made appearances at various festivals, including Download, Main Square (France), Vestrock (Holland), 2000 Trees, All Points East, and Reading and Leeds. He also joined the band for a live session for Radio 1 at Maida Vale Studios and featured in their recent headline set at Islington Academy.
When he’s not on the road, Matt also utilises skills gained on his Degree by managing and programming live music events at The Finborough Arms in Earls Court, London.
When asked how BIMM helped him prepare for his current work situation, Matt had this to say:
“Just getting a feel for the industry and having the time of my life in Brighton, it’s a special place. I also had countless tutorials with Dex Lush, who has been instrumental in guiding me and my career over the past few years. I can’t think of many other places where you have industry professionals such as Dex on hand to offer advice and assist you in reaching your various goals in the industry.”
